This is to inform you about the early release of the online self-paced training on medical abortion. This training was developed by the Human Reproduction Programme/Prevention of Unsafe Abortion Unit at HRP in collaboration with the WHO Academy. The training is based on the WHO Abortion Care Guideline (2022) and the WHO FP and CAC Toolkit for PHC Workforce and will provide you with the latest evidence-based information and guidance on the provision of safe and effective medical abortion services.
The training consists of four modules that cover the following topics:
- Module 1: Pre-abortion assessment
- Module 2: Medical Abortion fundamentals
- Module 3: Administration of medical abortion and follow-up
- Module 4: Medical abortion service delivery and health system considerations for abortion care

-Traditional and Complementary Medicine Professionals
-Auxiliary nurses/Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs)
-Nurses

-Associate/Advanced Associate Clinicians

-Specialist Medical Practitioners
The training is free of charge and open to the health workforce who are interested in learning more about medical abortion. Participants can access the training at any time and complete it at their own pace. All participants will need to register here and create a username and password. They will then be able to access the modules, download the course materials, and take the quizzes. An award of completion after completion of each module will be provided.
At the end of the course, participants will have the opportunity to provide feedback through a short survey. The feedback will help us to continuously improve the training and ensure that it meets the needs of the health workforce providing medical abortion care.
Continuous professional development is an important way of improving competences and I hope that this training will enhance health worker competencies in providing quality medical abortion services.
